Beautiful Visualizations Data from Cars.Gov

Some time ago I wrote an overview of data visualization styles along with a visualization tutorial for the book “Beautiful Visualization“. For the tutorial, I chose a set of data from a government website, figuring that the data would be available for a substantial amount of time.

Apparently the data was recently removed, which makes my tutorial hard to follow. After scouring my archives, I found the data again so I figured I’d host it here.

If you’re following my visualization tutorial and you need the data that should be at http://www.cars.gov/carsreport, then you can find it below:

New vehicles purchased as a part of the “cash for clunkers” program – new-vehicles.xls

Vehicles traded in as part of the “cash for clunkers” program – trade-in-vehicles.xls

  1. I was following along your tutorial and ran into the dead link. Shocked the site is no longer valid! Thanks for the update here, which I found after a quick search.
